Fort Shaw was built in 1867 to protect the newly constructed Mullan Road between Fort Benton and Helena, M.T. which served as the trade route for goods delivered to Fort Benton by steamboat and transported by wagon to many of the gold mining areas of the northwest. Fort Shaw soldiers also provided protection to settlers moving into the area.
Fort Shaw, known as the queen of all forts, is one of the best preserved of all Montana Territory posts with six remaining original buildings. Mostly recognized for its role in the Indian Wars, troops from Fort Shaw participated in the infamous Baker Massacre of the Blackfeet in the winter of 1870 on the Marias River, marched with Colonel Gibbon to the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876, pursued the Nez Perce in 1877, and fought in lesser engagements throughout the Fort’s existence.
After military use ended in 1891, Fort Shaw became the Fort Shaw Indian School for 18 years during which time the Indian Girls Basketball Team won the World Basketball Championship at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
